“Thou dost speak masterly!” Shakespeare’s sonnets are revered for a reason: infinities are explored in just fourteen lines ... In this category, you can perform any of Shakespeare’s sonnets from memory. Your choice could be any one from his quarto of 154 sonnets, or any complete sonnet from his plays.

Solo Acting (12-14 Years)

Choose an excerpt from your favourite play or monologue, lasting 4 minutes. A copy of the reading must be sent to us at entries@oratoryfestival.com by 30 April 2023. At the International Oratory Festival, our focus is on the words. Please don’t wear any special costumes, just dress as you would for any other category.

Public Speaking – Presenting an argument (12-14 Years)

Candidates can choose to give a persuasive speech presenting one side of the issue (for or against) or a balanced argument considering both sides. In the 12-14 Years category, you should speak on you own choice on a contemporary moral or ethical issue, lasting 4 minutes.

Public Speaking – Impromptu (12-14 Years)

You’ll speak for 4 minutes on an exciting general interest topic which will be given to you by the festival organisers 10 minutes before you speak. This is the perfect category for everyone who likes debating or thinking on your feet.

News Report (12-14 Years)

Reporting on an exciting news story is a thrilling challenge for our final new category in our May 2023 Oratory Festival.
